CLI (calling line identity) is the number the called party sees when the phone rings. In wholesale voice, the CLI your equipment sends is carried through every carrier in the chain to the destination network. Whether it arrives intact depends entirely on the route.
Low-cost routes often reach the destination through gateways or interconnects that strip the CLI, substitute a random local number, or mark the call anonymous. The symptoms are familiar: called parties see "unknown number", callbacks fail, and answer rates drop. Some destinations also penalise traffic with missing or invalid CLI through filtering or degraded routing.
For outbound operations the CLI is not a cosmetic detail. Answer rates move with it: people answer recognisable, callable numbers and ignore anonymous ones. Callbacks to a working CLI recover missed contacts. And compliance regimes in many countries require accurate calling-party identification.
